The courtyard at this Highbury house serves both as a thoroughfare to the front door, a storage area, and a garden. So it was important to ensure that all three functions would work in the confines of the space. By placing the front door to the house and the garden on the main axis a strong link was established between the two. Access to the street through the beautiful wrought iron gate then became a secondary axis, making the garden feel more focused and private. Raised beds and tall planting make the seating area feel peaceful and secluded. All the planting is suitable for the light conditions, with each bed receiving a few hours of direct sunlight every day as well as a number of hours of shade. |
