The clients, a young English couple, had renovated a Brussels town house, incorporating a new terrace off the living room and a ‘cour anglaise’ off the lower ground floor kitchen/dining area. The remaining space was to be planted, allowing access between the three levels, and also through a new back door to the street behind. A bicycle/tool store was also required.
It was decided to use hardwood decking on the terrace, bringing it flush with the wooden floor of the living room to give level access through the French windows. A brushed stainless steel balustrade and the use of Belgian blue limestone on steps, paths and ‘cour anglaise’ give the garden a contemporary urban feel, in keeping with the renovated style of the interior. A new wall was built to replace a long demolished partition wall to the neighbouring garden, and the traditional Brussels whitewash finish of the garden walls was refreshed. A new door was made at the back of the garden, down a flight of steps, to provide direct access to the street behind. The bike/tool store was set at street level for ease of use, and can also be accessed through the garden over the stepping stones in the circular lawn. Planting consists of mixed shrubs and perennials to provide year-round interest, with two small acers to screen out views of the houses opposite. |
